Sofía Cecilia Andretta is a Guatemalan visual artist, fashion designer, and educator based in Vienna. Her artistic practice is deeply rooted in the visual and symbolic language of Mayan textiles, whose vivid colours, rhythms, and narratives shaped her understanding of culture, memory, and identity from an early age. Textiles were not merely materials within her upbringing, but carriers of meaning—threads woven with history, spirituality, and collective knowledge.
Andretta’s artistic path unfolds through a multidisciplinary education grounded in textile practice, design, and pedagogy. She completed her training in Fashion, Design, and Textiles at HBLA Herbststrasse in Vienna, where she developed the ability to translate imagination into form. She subsequently earned a Bachelor’s degree in Fashion and Design Education, discovering the transformative potential of teaching as a creative and empowering act. Currently, she is further expanding her artistic language through studies in Art Education and Visual Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.
Her work moves fluidly between textile knowledge and artistic experimentation, weaving together materiality, emotion, and identity. Andretta explores the relationship between body and image, the emergence of narrative through texture, and the capacity of art to create intimate spaces of connection and reflection. Situated at the intersection of tradition and exploration, softness and structure, her practice reflects an ongoing dialogue between cultural heritage and contemporary expression.
For Andretta, visual art is both a way of seeing and a way of listening—an evolving process through which subtle truths beneath the surface are revealed. Each work marks a point of transition: a record of where she comes from, where she stands, and the paths yet to unfold.
