Ricardo Beltrán
Ricardo Beltrán is a Cuban artist and dancer based in Vienna, whose work transforms everyday experiences from the island of his childhood into layered visual narratives. Through vibrant colour and mixed-media collage, he develops a powerful visual language in which memory, movement, and material presence are held in careful balance. Colour in his work is never merely decorative, but functions as a deliberate and expressive force.Beltrán’s collages are rooted in a process of attentive observation and collection. Natural elements such as leaves, bark, and moss inform both the textures and forms of his compositions, evoking organic structures and insular landscapes. His works emerge through an intuitive, time-intensive process in which material, gesture, and rhythm converge—reflecting his background in movement and dance.
Originally trained as a sports teacher and movement coach in Cuba, Beltrán arrived in Vienna as a young adult and encountered visual art through an unexpected and transformative process. This shift marked the beginning of a sustained artistic practice that has since resulted in hundreds of works and participation in numerous national and international exhibitions, including the Art Brut Biennale in Hengelo, the Netherlands.
Today, Beltrán’s collages articulate a distinctive visual language shaped by migration, chance, and embodied experience. His work stands as a testament to artistic transformation beyond conventional paths, where intuition, material exploration, and lived experience form the foundation of a compelling contemporary practice.
