Niwat Chootoun
Niwat Chootoun Graduated from the Faculty of Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Arts at Silpakorn University, Thailand, receiving a Bachelor’s degree (Second Class Honors) and a Master’s degree. Has presented numerous solo and group exhibitions and received repeated recognition in national art competitions, including the top “Golden Brush” award at the 2011 King’s Memorial Painting Competition, as well as a Gold Award and multiple Bronze Awards at the Lotus Painting Competition.
Early artistic development was influenced by Thai National Artist Damrong Wong-uparach. This led to the development of a distinctive technique using straw to scrape roof textures into wet paint, forming a rustic and highly personal visual language.
Works frequently employ a bird’s-eye-view composition and a neutral palette of browns and greys to portray tranquil stilt houses and fishing village life. Detailed depictions of woven bamboo walls, extended verandas, and everyday utensils subtly reference the fishing livelihoods and daily rhythms of Thailand’s southern coastal communities. Through the use of negative space and clear visual hierarchy, attention is guided toward the architectural forms, conveying a sense of simplicity, quietude, and poetic rural memory.
