Moka Sheung Yan

Moka Sheung Yan is a Vienna-based artist whose multifaceted body of work delves into the realms of perception and psychological depth. She studied Fine Arts at the London College of Arts and the University of Applied Arts Vienna, and her works have been featured in solo and group exhibitions across Europe. In 2014, her sculptures were showcased in Stimmen, a film by Bulgarian-Austrian artist and filmmaker Mara Mattuschka. In 2017, she was invited as a special guest by Red Carpet Showrooms to present her work at the Bon Bon Ball in the Vienna Konzerthaus, where she displayed a painting dedicated to Erwin Pröll, the former Governor of Lower Austria. This painting now resides in his private collection.

Moka’s artistic practice spans a broad range of media, including oil painting, photography, sculpture, fashion, installation, and motion pictures. A central theme in her work is the exploration of the “Uncanny,” inspired by her fascination with tales, dolls and mannequins, which lends an unsettling psychological complexity to her creations. Her fragmented forms invite viewers into an ambiguous space where comfort and discomfort intersect, sparking an intimate dialogue around themes of vulnerability and transformation.

The fragmented depictions of body parts in her work evoke Hans Bellmer’s infamous dolls, with each fragment carrying its own evolution—a visual language of transformation that embodies a continuous state of becoming. Through this process, Moka continually explores and researches her own identity, navigating different social layers and dimensions of self.
