The Noriker, depicted at the Tirolerhof in Schönbrunn, is a medium-heavy mountain cold-blood horse with a unique variety of coat colors, ranging from black and bay to blue roan and spotted tiger horses.
Once a workhorse and loyal companion of armored knights, today it is cherished again as a leisure and carriage horse, and in Schönbrunn it also stands as a symbol of preserving endangered native livestock breeds.
Across Austria, there are about 7,000 Norikers – but in this painting, only this one tender moment between mother and child truly matters.
