Juan Muñoz Sotelo

Juan Bernardo Muñoz Sotelo, known artistically as LALOK, is a Mexican architect and painter born on 7 September 1987 in Guanajuato, Mexico. Deeply rooted in his cultural heritage, LALOK’s artistic practice reflects an ongoing dialogue between contemporary expression and the ancestral visual languages of Mexico. His work has been presented in both national and international exhibitions, positioning him as a distinctive voice within contemporary Latin American–influenced art.

Strongly inspired by pre-Hispanic culture, Mexican traditions, and the spiritual and mystical dimensions of his homeland, LALOK seeks to translate complexity into visual balance. Through the use of diverse techniques and stylistic approaches, he explores the idea of order emerging from chaos. Flat forms, volumes, shadows, and movement play a central role in his compositions, creating dynamic images that oscillate between structure and emotion.

Everyday symbols and pre-Hispanic figures recur throughout his paintings, not as nostalgic references, but as living elements of identity. His work is a conscious act of remembrance and celebration—an effort to honour his roots, preserve cultural memory, and reassert the relevance of indigenous and popular imagery within a contemporary context. Architecture informs his sense of composition, while painting allows for expressive freedom, intuition, and transformation.

Guided by Pablo Picasso’s belief, “I am always doing what I cannot do, so that I may learn how to do it,” LALOK approaches art as a continuous process of exploration and growth. His visual language aligns with contemporary expressionism, enriched by symbolism, cultural depth, and emotional intensity. Through his work, LALOK not only affirms his Mexican identity but elevates it—transforming heritage into a powerful, evolving artistic statement.
