Sonia Siblik
Sonia Siblik is a curator, cultural organiser, artist, and educator based in Vienna. Art has been an integral part of her life since childhood, strongly influenced by her father’s engagement with antiques and art collections. She initially pursued academic studies and professional training in education, special education, and therapeutic pedagogy, working as a teacher and therapist in Mexico and Austria between 1992 and 2003.
After relocating to Vienna, Siblik gradually shifted her focus towards curatorial and artistic practice. During the renovation of the family business premises, she conceived the idea of transforming parts of the space into gallery rooms, creating a platform for artists to present their work. Since 2007, she has worked as a curator and exhibition organiser at Lichtraum eins by Paul Siblik.
In 2016, she initiated the long-term public art project Street/Art – Kunst am Zaun, developed for the Börseviertel Association, which she has curated and directed continuously for over seven years. Her work is characterised by sustained international collaboration and exhibitions both in Austria and abroad, fostering cultural exchange and dialogue across borders.
As an artist, Siblik’s practice is deeply rooted in Mexican Cartonería (papier-mâché), a
traditional sculptural technique she approaches from a contemporary, symbolic perspective. Through figures such as hearts, crosses, animals, and ritual objects, her Cartonería works explore themes of identity, memory, healing, and transformation. She frequently combines traditional craftsmanship with printmaking, drawing, and mixed media, creating works that bridge ancestral knowledge and contemporary artistic language. Her artworks have been exhibited internationally and are often integrated into thematic exhibitions and community-based projects.
Between 2020 and 2022, she co-founded and curated the artist collective La Malinche, acting as organiser, curator, concept developer, and artist. Since 2022, she has continued this multifaceted role within LichTraum by Sonia Siblik, focusing on artistic community projects. She is also active as an instructor for Mexican papier-mâché (Cartonería) courses at Format 60+, sharing traditional techniques in an educational and inclusive context.
In 2023, Siblik founded the association Künstlerische Gemeinschaftsprojekte LichTraum and initiated collaborations with Katerina Teresidi and the association MIR – medias in res. In 2024, she established the studio BasementArt by LichTraum as an experimental space for artistic production and education. In 2025, she became a co-founder of the
association Cultura Viva together with Fabian García and further expanded her artistic practice through advanced masterclasses in linocut and xylography with Fabian García (Cínico Canino) and Prof. Pedro Peralta.
Through her curatorial, artistic, and pedagogical work, Sonia Siblik positions art as a
space of encounter, healing, and collective growth—bridging cultures, generations, and disciplines while honouring the transformative power of traditional craftsmanship in a contemporary context.
