Carles Berruezo Domingo
Carles Berruezo Domingo is a photographer and visual artist born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1957. He became a Mexican citizen in 2014 and is currently based in Vienna, Austria, where he is actively integrated into the country’s cultural scene. His artistic practice centres on observation, memory, and the transformation of everyday life, using photography as a reflective and poetic medium.
Introduced to photography at an early age by his father, a devoted enthusiast of analogue black-and-white photography, Berruezo developed a deep and lasting connection to the medium. Entirely self-taught, he has cultivated a sensitive visual language characterised by careful composition, attention to detail, and a contemplative approach to time and meaning. His work often oscillates between documentary and poetic registers, creating images that reinterpret cultural and social realities while engaging with collective and personal memory.
Berruezo has lived and worked in Spain, India, Israel, and Mexico, and has travelled extensively throughout Asia and Europe. These experiences have profoundly shaped his artistic outlook, leading him to document cultural, religious, and social aspects of diverse communities with respect and attentiveness. His photographs reflect a strong commitment to cultural dialogue and visual storytelling.
He has participated in numerous national and international photography competitions, receiving several awards and recognitions. A particularly significant project in his career is his role as editor and photographer of the Israeli-Arab cookbook Tales and Recipes, for which he produced over 250 photographs of culinary works as well as extensive visual documentation of Jaffa, the historic city adjacent to Tel Aviv.
Berruezo Domingo works primarily with a Nikon D7500 camera, using a range of lenses adapted to each project. His work has been exhibited internationally in both solo and group exhibitions. Through his photographic practice, he understands the image as a space of encounter—between experience and memory, reality and interpretation—inviting viewers into a quiet yet profound visual dialogue.
