Opening Prologue: “Light of the Future” Arts Festival

Opening Prologue: “Light of the Future” Arts Festival at the Hofburg The horse is the earliest pulse of civilization. In the most ancient echoes of time, it struck the earth with its hooves, awakening the direction of human progress.
In the East, the steeds of the Han and Tang Dynasties stood tall against the wind.

They traversed vast deserts and mighty rivers, carving out the Silk Road and connecting civilizations across ten thousand miles. They carried strength, they sought the horizon, and they embodied the boundless spirit of a golden age.

In the West, the roads of Rome extended by the stride of the horse; the knights of the Middle Ages were born of the saddle.

The horse forged courage, loyalty, and honor into the very core of European civilization, allowing era after era to write their epics in full gallop.
Whether in the East or the West, it was the horse that first truly unified the world. It was transport, it was military might, it was a messenger of culture—and above all, it was the irreplaceable force that propelled history forward.
The year 2026 marks the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Austria and China.

Half a century of friendship has mirrored the rhythmic gallop of hooves—crossing languages and landscapes to connect our hearts.

Now, as we stand at the threshold of the 2026 Year of the Horse, the “Horse” signifies more than historical glory; it has become a totem of future hope—a symbol of cooperation, understanding, and shared vision.

It is against this backdrop that the meaning of the horse has quietly transformed. No longer a force for the conquest of territory, it has become a gentle symbol of global connection.

The artist Su Meilun responds to this shift with a unique creative vision. The horses in his works are ethereal, serene, and free. They seem to tell us:
True power is not in the charge, but in peace; True momentum is not outward, but inward. Today, within the Hofburg—a palace that has witnessed the shifting tides of Europe—the echoes of hooves from the depths of time resound once more. They span millennia and thousands of miles: from the Han and Tang to Rome, from chivalry to modern art, finally converging here and now into a light directed toward the future. This is the “Light of the Future.”

With the strength, spirit, and peaceful vision of the horse, we illuminate art, culture, and our shared human tomorrow.

The Hofburg “Light of the Future” Arts Festival: In the spirit of the horse, we embark on the collective journey of humanity’s future.
