Mercedes de Luis Andrés
The lines and colours in the work of Mercedes de Luis Andrés function as a visual archaeology of
memory. Mercedes (b. 1982, Palencia, Spain) draws inspiration from her travel journals across
Europe, capturing the intersection between urban landscapes and train journeys. Her artistic
practice, Carnet de Voyage, employs watercolour, pastel, and charcoal to convey the artist’s own
context. Her work also includes commissioned pieces, such as the Romanesque ruins of Nogal de
las Huertas.
What inspires you? The crossroads of cultures. The beauty of the world lies in its diversity. I
observe to find what reflects light rather than darkness, a narrative that exists alongside, and often
in contrast to, the polarization of the mass media.
What sounds accompany you while you work? Preferably silence or the natural sounds of my
surroundings, though I often find focus in ancient Chinese music.
What is your preferred medium? Charcoal and pastel.
If you could install your work anywhere, where would it be? In hospitals and waiting rooms, where
art can fulfill a healing function.
If you weren’t an artist, what would you do? I already am “also that.” Alongside my art, I
conduct research on reading practices, public opinion, and media education methods.
What are your favorite places outside your studio? The landscapes seen from train windows.
