Michael Fuchs
Michael Fuchs
Michael Fuchs (b. 1952) is a distinguished Austrian-American painter and architect whose life and work represent a profound bridge between the Old World traditions of Vienna and the vibrant modernism of post-war America.
Artistic Lineage and Education
The eldest son of the legendary Ernst Fuchs—co-founder of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism—and American graphic designer Geraldine Krongold, Michael’s formative years were spent between the artistic hubs of New York and Los Angeles. Under his mother’s early mentorship, he produced his first paintings at the age of twelve.
In 1970, Fuchs returned to his roots in Austria to apprentice under his father. He formally refined his craft at the University of Applied Arts Vienna (under Karl Unger) and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (under Anton Lehmden), earning his Master of Fine Arts in 1976. Driven by a desire to master the structural soul of art, he returned to the Academy to study architecture under Gustav Peichl, obtaining his Master of Architecture in 1987.
Creative Philosophy and Professional Life
A master of technique, Fuchs’ work is characterized by a rare synthesis of architectural precision and the “Academy Painter” tradition. His international study travels throughout Europe and the United States in the 1970s informed a style that is both historically grounded and contemporary in its execution.
Michael is the patriarch of a true artistic dynasty. He is married to the artist Cornelia Hagen-Fuchs, and together they have raised two children, Clemens Maria and Magdalena Maria, both of whom have emerged as significant talents in the contemporary art world.
Mentorship and the Klosterneuburg Studio
Beyond his personal portfolio, Michael Fuchs is a dedicated educator. At his private studio in Klosterneuburg, he serves as a mentor to the next generation of artists. By providing rigorous training and professional guidance, he ensures the continuity of the classical and fantastic traditions that have defined the Fuchs name for decades.
